About
Step Into the Wild
Leave the safari vehicle behind and experience Tanzania at ground level. A walking safari slows everything down, drawing attention to the details that are easy to miss from a 4×4, from animal tracks and plants to bird calls, insects and the quiet rhythm of the bush.
Led by an experienced guide and, where required, an armed ranger, this is an intimate way to experience the wilderness and understand how the landscape fits together.
Location: Selected parks and wildlife areas
Experience: Guided bush walk
Duration: Around 1.5–4 hours
Best For: Nature Lovers · Photographers · Active Travellers · Repeat Safari Guests
The Experience
Into the Bush
Your walk begins with a safety briefing before heading into the landscape with your guide.
Rather than focusing only on large animals, a walking safari introduces you to the smaller stories of the wilderness: footprints in the dust, medicinal plants, animal trails, dung, feathers and signs that reveal what has passed through before you.
Learn to Read the Landscape
Your guide helps interpret what surrounds you, explaining animal behaviour, ecosystems, plants and the relationships between different species.
You may encounter giraffes, antelope, zebra, monkeys and other wildlife depending on the area, although sightings are never the sole purpose of the walk.
A Different Kind of Safari
There is something completely different about experiencing the bush without the barrier of a vehicle.
You hear more. You notice more. Even familiar landscapes feel different when explored on foot.
Where Can I Do a Walking Safari?
Depending on your itinerary and current park regulations, Balo can arrange walking experiences in suitable areas such as:
Arusha National Park
Tarangire and surrounding wildlife areas
Ngorongoro highlands
Selected Serengeti areas or private concessions
Lake Manyara region
The best location will depend on your safari route, season and availability.
