Mahale Mountains National Park
Chimpanzees, Mountains & Lake Tanganyika
Mahale Mountains National Park is one of Tanzania’s most remote and rewarding destinations, where forested mountains rise directly from the shores of Lake Tanganyika. The park is best known for chimpanzee trekking, but the combination of rainforest, beaches, crystal-clear water and dramatic mountain scenery makes Mahale feel more like a hidden wilderness retreat than a traditional safari park.

Why Visit Mahale?
Chimpanzee Trekking
The main attraction is the chance to trek through the forest in search of habituated chimpanzee groups. Encounters can be deeply memorable, especially when the chimps are active and moving through the trees around you.
A Unique Setting
Few places combine wildlife, mountains and lake scenery so beautifully. Mahale’s beaches and clear water give the park an atmosphere that feels completely different from any savannah safari.
Remote & Exclusive
Reaching Mahale takes more effort, which helps preserve its quiet, uncrowded character. The remoteness is part of the appeal.
More Than Primates
Between treks, visitors can enjoy forest walks, lake activities and peaceful time by the water.
Exploring Mahale
Chimpanzee Trekking
Treks begin on foot with experienced guides who track recent chimpanzee movements through the forest.
The length and difficulty can vary depending on where the chimps are feeding and travelling, so some days may involve longer walks than others.
Forest & Mountain Trails
Mahale’s interior is made up of steep forested slopes and mountain trails that reward visitors with rich vegetation, birds and other primates.
Lake Tanganyika
The lake forms one of the defining parts of the experience. Its clear water and sandy shoreline create opportunities for swimming, boat trips and relaxed afternoons after trekking.
Wildlife You May See
Chimpanzee · Red-Tailed Monkey · Blue Monkey · Colobus Monkey · Bushpig · Bushbuck · Birds
The park is primarily a primate and wilderness destination rather than a classic big-game safari area.
Best Time to Visit
June – October
The drier months generally offer easier trekking conditions and are popular for chimpanzee tracking.
November – March
The forest becomes greener and more atmospheric, while the lake remains a major part of the experience.
April – May
Heavier rains can make forest trails more challenging and some operations may be more limited.
The best time depends on whether your priority is easier trekking conditions or lush forest scenery.
