Katavi National Park
Tanzania at Its Wildest
Katavi National Park is one of Tanzania’s most remote and least-visited safari destinations, which is exactly what makes it so special. The park is defined by broad floodplains, seasonal rivers, woodland and vast stretches of wilderness where wildlife can gather in impressive numbers, especially during the dry season.

Why Visit Katavi?
True Remote Wilderness
Katavi offers a safari experience far removed from the busy northern circuit. Visitor numbers are low, game drives feel private and the sense of isolation is one of the park’s greatest strengths.
Large Buffalo Herds
The park is especially known for impressive buffalo concentrations, sometimes gathering in very large herds across the open plains.
Hippos & Crocodiles
During the dry season, shrinking water sources can draw large numbers of hippos and crocodiles into increasingly concentrated areas.
Strong Predator Activity
Lions, hyenas and other predators follow the movements of grazing animals, creating excellent opportunities for dramatic wildlife encounters.
Exploring Katavi
Chada Plain
The open floodplains are among the park’s most productive wildlife areas, especially when water becomes limited and animals gather around remaining sources.
Katuma River
The river and associated pools support hippos, crocodiles and a wide range of other wildlife, particularly during the dry months.
Wildlife You May See
Buffalo · Elephant · Lion · Hippo · Crocodile · Giraffe · Zebra · Topi · Hartebeest · Hyena · Leopard
The park is also rewarding for birdlife and general wilderness photography.
Best Time to Visit
June – October
The dry season is generally the strongest period for wildlife viewing, as animals concentrate around water sources and floodplains dry out.
November – March
The landscape becomes greener and more dispersed, with strong birdlife and fewer visitors.
April – May
The rains can make access more difficult and some camps may operate seasonally.
For most travellers, the dry season offers the classic Katavi experience.

How Long Should You Stay?
Because Katavi is remote, I’d recommend at least 2–3 nights, with 3–4 nights being even better.
The destination rewards travellers who slow down and let the wilderness unfold without rushing between parks.
Combine Katavi With
Mahale Mountains National Park
One of the best combinations in western Tanzania, pairing classic safari with chimpanzee trekking beside Lake Tanganyika.

Adds another primate-focused experience to a western Tanzania itinerary.
Dar es Salaam or Arusha
Katavi is most practical as part of a fly-in safari.
