Tarangire National Park
Elephant Country Beneath Ancient Baobabs
Tarangire has a character all its own, shaped by giant baobab trees, open savannah and the winding Tarangire River. The park is especially famous for its elephants, but its quieter atmosphere and varied landscapes make it much more than a one-species destination. Compared with some of northern Tanzania’s busier parks, Tarangire often feels wonderfully spacious.

Why Visit Tarangire?
Large Elephant Herds
Tarangire is one of northern Tanzania’s best places to see elephants, often in impressive family groups moving between feeding areas and the river.
Iconic Baobab Landscapes
The park’s ancient baobabs give Tarangire a distinctive visual identity, especially in the dry season when the landscape becomes golden and dramatic.
Excellent Dry-Season Wildlife
As water becomes scarce elsewhere, the Tarangire River attracts increasing numbers of animals, making the park especially rewarding during the drier months.
Rich Birdlife
Tarangire is also a strong birding destination, with a wide range of species found across its woodland, grassland and wetland habitats.
Exploring Tarangire
The Tarangire River
The river is the park’s lifeline and one of the most important wildlife areas during the dry season. Elephants, zebra, wildebeest, buffalo and antelope are frequently drawn toward its waters.
Open Savannah & Woodland
Tarangire combines broad plains with acacia woodland, seasonal swamps and baobab-studded hills, giving game drives plenty of visual variety.
Wildlife You May See

The park is also known for less commonly seen species such as oryx and kudu in some areas.
Best Time to Visit
June – October
This is generally Tarangire’s strongest wildlife season. Dry conditions bring animals toward the river and other permanent water sources.
November – March
The landscape becomes greener and birdlife is excellent. Wildlife remains good, although some migratory animals spread into surrounding areas.
April – May
The long rains bring lush scenery and fewer visitors, creating a quieter safari atmosphere.
Tarangire can be visited throughout the year, but its personality changes noticeably with the seasons.
