Best Time to Visit Tanzania

Every Season Tells a Different Story

There is no single best month to visit Tanzania. The right time depends on what you want most from the journey, whether that means the Great Migration, dry-season wildlife, Kilimanjaro, green landscapes, fewer crowds or time on the coast.

That is what makes Tanzania so versatile. The country changes with the seasons, and each period brings its own rhythm.

January to March

Green Season & Calving Time

The year begins with warm weather and greener landscapes across much of northern Tanzania.

This is an especially interesting period for the southern Serengeti and Ndutu region, where large migration herds gather and many wildebeest calves are born. Predator activity can also be strong during this period.

It is also a popular time for:

  • Serengeti safaris

  • Ngorongoro

  • Photography

  • Kilimanjaro climbs

  • Zanzibar beach stays

Best For: Calving season · Green scenery · Photography · Safari & beach combinations

April to May

The Long Rains

These are generally the wettest months in Tanzania.

The landscape becomes lush and dramatic, visitor numbers are lower, and many safari areas feel quieter. Rain can affect road conditions and some remote camps may reduce operations, but the rewards include fewer vehicles, rich colours and a very different atmosphere.

This period can suit travellers who value:

  • fewer crowds

  • lower seasonal rates in some properties

  • lush scenery

  • birdlife

  • slower travel

Best For: Quiet safaris · Green landscapes · Photography · Value-focused travel

June to October

Classic Safari Season

This is the main dry season and one of the most popular periods for wildlife safaris.

As water becomes scarcer, animals gather around rivers and permanent water sources, making wildlife easier to locate in many parks.

The Serengeti migration gradually moves northward during this period, while Tarangire becomes especially rewarding for elephants and dry-season wildlife concentrations.

These months are also popular for climbing Kilimanjaro.

Best For: Wildlife viewing · Serengeti · Tarangire · Kilimanjaro · First-time safaris

November to December

Short Rains & Fresh Landscapes

The short rains begin to refresh the plains after the dry season.

The landscape turns greener, migratory birds return and the Serengeti herds begin moving south again as fresh grazing develops.

Rain usually comes in shorter periods rather than continuous all-day downpours, although conditions vary.

Best For: Green-season safaris · Birdlife · Photography · Fewer crowds

Best Time for the Great Migration

The Great Migration is not one event in one place. The herds move continuously through the Serengeti ecosystem according to rainfall and grazing conditions.

A useful general guide:

December – March

Southern Serengeti & Ndutu

Large herds gather across the southern plains, with calving usually becoming a major focus during this period.

April – May

Moving Northwest

The herds gradually begin moving away from the southern plains.

June – July

Western & Central Serengeti

Migration movement continues toward the western and northern parts of the ecosystem.

July – October

Northern Serengeti

The northern Serengeti becomes especially important, with possible Mara River crossing activity.

November

Moving South Again

The herds begin following fresh grazing southward as the short rains return.

Important: Migration movement is natural and changes according to rainfall, so exact locations can never be guaranteed far in advance.

Best Time for Kilimanjaro

Two periods are particularly popular for climbing:

January – March

Generally good climbing conditions and often quieter than the main mid-year season.

June – October

One of the most popular periods, with generally drier conditions.

April and May usually bring heavier rainfall, while November can also be wetter.

Even during the drier seasons, mountain weather can change quickly.

Best Time for Zanzibar

June – October

Comfortable, generally drier conditions make this an excellent period for beach holidays.

December – February

Warm and sunny, ideal for travellers wanting tropical beach weather.

March – May

The main rainy season can bring heavier showers and higher humidity.

November

Short rains may occur, but there are still many sunny periods.

So, When Should You Go?

Instead of choosing a month first, start with what you want to experience.

If your priority is big wildlife concentrations, travel in the dry season.

If you want green scenery and fewer vehicles, consider the wetter months.

If the Great Migration is the focus, build the itinerary around where the herds are likely to be during your travel period.

If you want safari plus Zanzibar, there are good combinations throughout much of the year.
