Serengeti National Park

Where the Plains Never Seem to End

The Serengeti is Tanzania’s most iconic safari landscape, a vast wilderness of open grasslands, acacia-dotted plains and extraordinary concentrations of wildlife. It is best known for the Great Migration, when immense herds of wildebeest and zebra move through the ecosystem in search of fresh grazing and water.

But the Serengeti is much more than migration. Lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, giraffes and countless other species live here year-round, making it one of Africa’s most rewarding safari destinations in almost every season.

Why Visit the Serengeti?

The Great Migration

The Serengeti forms the heart of one of the world’s most remarkable wildlife movements, with vast herds travelling through different parts of the ecosystem throughout the year.

Exceptional Predator Sightings

The open plains create excellent opportunities to see lions, cheetahs and other predators, especially in areas with large concentrations of grazing animals.

Endless Landscapes

The Serengeti delivers the classic image of East Africa: huge skies, open plains, isolated acacias and wildlife stretching toward the horizon.

Wildlife All Year

Even outside the migration season, resident wildlife makes the Serengeti one of Tanzania’s strongest year-round safari destinations.

The Different Areas of the Serengeti

Central Serengeti

The Wildlife Heartland

The Seronera area is one of the most reliable regions for year-round game viewing. Permanent water sources attract wildlife throughout the seasons, and the area is particularly well known for big cats.

Best for: First-time visitors · Big cats · Year-round safaris

Northern Serengeti

Wild Country & River Crossings

The northern Serengeti becomes particularly important during the migration season as wildebeest herds move toward the Mara River and the Kenya border.

The region feels more remote and open than the central plains.

Best for: Migration season · River crossings · Remote safaris

Western Corridor

Rivers, Woodland & Migration Routes

The western Serengeti follows the Grumeti River and features more woodland and riverine landscapes.

Migration herds pass through parts of this region during their seasonal movement.

Best for: Migration safaris · Varied scenery

Southern Serengeti

Calving Season Country

The southern plains and Ndutu area become especially important during the green season, when large herds gather and many wildebeest calves are born.

Predator activity can be particularly intense during this period.

Best for: Calving season · Photography · Green-season travel

Wildlife in the Serengeti

The Serengeti supports an exceptional variety of wildlife.

You may encounter:

Lion · Leopard · Cheetah · Elephant · Buffalo · Giraffe · Wildebeest · Zebra · Hippo · Hyena · Gazelle · Eland

Birdlife is equally impressive, with everything from large raptors to colourful grassland species.

The Great Migration

Nature Without a Timetable

The migration is a continuous movement rather than a single event.

Wildebeest and zebra follow rainfall and fresh grazing through the Serengeti ecosystem, meaning the location of the herds changes throughout the year.

A simple seasonal guide:

December – March
Southern Serengeti and Ndutu. Calving season and predator activity.

April – May
Herds begin moving northwest as the long rains reshape the plains.

June – July
Migration moves through the western and central regions.

July – October
Northern Serengeti becomes a major focus, including possible Mara River crossings.

November
Herds gradually begin moving south again with the short rains.

I would add a small note underneath:

Migration timing varies each year depending on rainfall and grazing conditions.

Best Time to Visit

June – October

Dry conditions, easier wildlife viewing and excellent general safari conditions.

December – March

Green landscapes and excellent wildlife around the southern plains, especially during calving season.

April – May

Long rains bring fewer visitors, dramatic skies and lush scenery.

November

Short rains refresh the landscape and begin drawing migration herds south.

For Balo, I’d avoid saying there is one “best” month. The better message is:

The best time depends on what you want to see.

Things to Do in the Serengeti

  • Great Migration safaris

  • Hot air balloon safari

How Long Should You Stay?

For most travellers, I’d recommend at least 2–3 nights in the Serengeti.

Three or more nights gives you time to explore different areas without turning every safari day into a long transfer.

For migration-focused journeys, the ideal stay depends on the region and season.

Combine Serengeti With

Ngorongoro Crater
A natural pairing and one of the most popular northern Tanzania safari combinations.

Tarangire National Park
Adds elephant country and a very different landscape.

Lake Manyara
Useful for shorter northern circuit itineraries.

Zanzibar
A classic safari-and-beach combination after several days in the wilderness.
