Udzungwa Mountains National Park
Waterfalls, Rainforest & Wild Mountain Trails
Udzungwa Mountains National Park offers one of the most refreshing contrasts to Tanzania’s traditional safari parks. Instead of open savannah, the landscape rises into dense forest, steep mountain slopes, river valleys and dramatic waterfalls. It is a destination for travellers who want to walk, explore and experience Tanzania on foot, with rich biodiversity and a strong sense of wilderness.

Why Visit Udzungwa?
Spectacular Hiking
Udzungwa is one of Tanzania’s strongest hiking destinations, with trails ranging from shorter forest walks to more demanding mountain routes.
Sanje Waterfalls
The park’s most famous attraction is Sanje Waterfall, where water drops dramatically through the forest in several stages and viewpoints open across the surrounding landscape.
Rare Primates
Udzungwa is particularly important for primate conservation and supports species found in few other places.
A Safari Without the Vehicle
There are no traditional game-drive roads through much of the park. The experience is about walking into the forest, listening, observing and discovering the landscape at a completely different pace.
Exploring Udzungwa
Sanje Waterfall Trail
This is one of the park’s signature hikes, climbing through forest toward viewpoints overlooking the waterfalls and surrounding valleys.
Depending on the route, visitors can enjoy different viewpoints and areas near the falls before descending.
Tropical Forest
The forest is rich with towering trees, vines, butterflies, birds and primates. Even without large wildlife sightings, simply walking through the landscape can be a memorable part of the journey.
Wildlife You May See
Udzungwa Red Colobus · Sanje Mangabey · Black-and-White Colobus · Blue Monkey · Bushbuck · Duiker
The mountains are also exceptionally rich in birds, butterflies and plant species.
Best Time to Visit
June – October
Drier conditions usually make hiking easier and trails more comfortable.
November – March
The forest becomes greener, waterfalls are stronger and birdlife can be excellent.
April – May
Heavy rains create lush scenery and powerful waterfalls, although some trails may become slippery and more challenging.
The ideal season depends on whether you prioritise easier hiking or dramatic waterfalls.
