Ngorongoro Crater

A Natural Amphitheatre of Wildlife

Ngorongoro is one of Tanzania’s most extraordinary safari destinations, a vast volcanic caldera surrounded by steep highlands and filled with an exceptional concentration of wildlife. From the crater rim, the landscape drops dramatically into open grasslands, forests, wetlands and soda lakes below, creating one of the most distinctive safari settings in East Africa.

Why Visit Ngorongoro?

Exceptional Wildlife Concentration

The crater floor supports an impressive variety of wildlife within a relatively compact area, making it possible to see a great deal during a single game drive.

Big Five Opportunities

Ngorongoro is one of Tanzania’s best-known areas for Big Five viewing, with lions, elephants, buffalo and black rhino among the wildlife travellers may encounter.

Dramatic Landscapes

The experience begins before you even descend into the crater. Views from the rim stretch across the entire caldera, while the crater floor combines grassland, woodland, lakes and marshes.

Easy to Combine

Ngorongoro sits naturally between destinations such as Lake Manyara, Tarangire and the Serengeti, making it an essential part of many northern Tanzania itineraries.

Exploring the Ngorongoro Crater

Descend Into the Crater

Safari vehicles descend from the highlands onto the crater floor, where game drives explore a variety of habitats within the caldera.

Open grasslands attract large numbers of grazing animals, while woodland areas provide shelter for elephants and other species. Lakes and wetlands support hippos and abundant birdlife.

Wildlife on the Crater Floor

Wildlife may include:

Lion · Black Rhino · Elephant · Buffalo · Wildebeest · Zebra · Hippo · Hyena · Jackal · Gazelle

The enclosed geography makes the crater feel very different from the open Serengeti plains.

Lerai Forest

This forested area on the crater floor is particularly associated with elephants and provides a striking contrast to the surrounding grasslands.

Lake Magadi

The shallow soda lake attracts waterbirds and, depending on conditions, flamingos, adding another layer to the crater’s varied scenery.

Ngorongoro Beyond the Crater

The wider Ngorongoro Conservation Area is much larger than the crater itself.

Its landscapes include volcanic highlands, grasslands, archaeological sites and areas where Maasai communities continue traditional pastoral life alongside wildlife.

This makes Ngorongoro more than a single game drive. Depending on your itinerary, the area can also be combined with:

  • Maasai cultural experiences

  • Olduvai Gorge

  • Highland scenery

  • Walking experiences in selected areas

  • Routes toward the southern Serengeti and Ndutu

Best Time to Visit

Ngorongoro offers rewarding wildlife viewing throughout the year because many animals remain within or around the crater.

June – October

The dry season generally brings clear conditions and excellent wildlife viewing.

December – March

Green landscapes and a good period for combining Ngorongoro with the southern Serengeti and Ndutu.

April – May

The long rains create lush scenery and fewer visitors, although roads and weather can be wetter.

November

Short rains refresh the highlands and surrounding landscapes.

Because Ngorongoro works well year-round, the best timing often depends more on the other destinations in your safari than on the crater itself.
