Lake Manyara National Park

Forest, Flamingos & the Great Rift Valley

Lake Manyara National Park may be smaller than Serengeti or Tarangire, but it packs an impressive variety of landscapes into a compact area. The park stretches beneath the dramatic escarpment of the Great Rift Valley, moving from dense groundwater forest to open grassland, acacia woodland, wetlands and the shallow waters of Lake Manyara itself.

Why Visit Lake Manyara?

Remarkable Landscape Variety

Few parks change character as quickly as Lake Manyara. A single game drive can move from thick forest and towering trees to open plains and lakeshore habitats.

Excellent Birdlife

The lake and surrounding wetlands attract a wide variety of bird species, making Manyara an especially rewarding destination for birdwatchers.

Elephant & Primate Sightings

The forested areas provide habitat for elephants, baboons, monkeys and other wildlife that can feel very different from the open-plains safari experience.

Perfect for Shorter Itineraries

Its position between Arusha, Tarangire and Ngorongoro makes Lake Manyara easy to include without requiring a major detour.

Exploring Lake Manyara

Groundwater Forest

The entrance area passes through lush forest fed by underground springs. Towering trees, monkeys and bird calls create an unexpectedly green introduction to the park.

The Lakeshore

Lake Manyara dominates much of the landscape. Water levels change seasonally, influencing where wildlife and birds gather.

Open Plains & Acacia Woodland

Beyond the forest, the landscape opens into grasslands and woodland where giraffes, buffalo, zebra, antelope and elephants may be encountered.

Wildlife You May See

Elephant · Giraffe · Buffalo · Zebra · Hippo · Baboon · Monkey · Warthog · Impala

Lake Manyara has also long been associated with tree-climbing lions, although sightings are never guaranteed.

Birdlife at Lake Manyara

The combination of lake, wetland, forest and woodland habitats makes the park one of northern Tanzania’s most interesting birding stops.

Depending on season and water conditions, visitors may encounter flamingos and other waterbirds along with pelicans, storks, herons, raptors and colourful forest species.

For dedicated birdwatchers, Manyara offers much more than simply a quick stop between larger safari parks.

Best Time to Visit

June – October

Drier conditions generally make wildlife easier to spot and combine well with the wider northern safari season.

November – March

The landscape becomes greener, migratory birds add to the park’s birdlife and scenery can be especially attractive.

April – May

The long rains create lush vegetation and fewer visitors, although some roads may become more challenging.

Lake Manyara works throughout the year and is often chosen based on how it fits into the wider safari route.
