7-Day Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climb

About

The Classic Scenic Route to Uhuru Peak

Known for its dramatic landscapes and varied terrain, the Machame Route is one of Kilimanjaro’s most rewarding approaches. Over seven days, the trail rises from lush rainforest into heath and moorland, crosses the stark alpine desert and finally reaches the glaciers surrounding Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.

The 7-day itinerary allows more time for acclimatization than shorter Machame climbs. Its famous “climb high, sleep low” sections help your body adjust gradually while the changing scenery makes almost every day feel different. For trekkers looking for a challenging but well-paced Kilimanjaro experience, this is one of our strongest route choices.

Itinerary

Day 1: Machame Gate → Machame Camp

Elevation: 1,800 m → 3,000 m
Habitat: Montane Rainforest
Trekking Time: Approx. 5–7 hours

Your Kilimanjaro journey begins with a transfer to Machame Gate, where we complete park registration and meet the mountain crew. Once everything is ready, the first footsteps toward Uhuru Peak disappear beneath the canopy of Kilimanjaro’s rainforest.

The trail climbs steadily through dense vegetation, giant ferns and moss-covered trees. Colobus monkeys may appear among the branches while the sounds of the forest accompany the climb. By late afternoon, you reach Machame Camp, where your tents and evening meal await. Your first night on Kilimanjaro begins beneath the mountain sky.

Overnight: Machame Camp
Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: 3,000 m → 3,850 m
Habitat: Heath & Moorland
Trekking Time: Approx. 4–6 hours

After breakfast, the rainforest gradually falls behind as you climb into Kilimanjaro’s heath and moorland zone. Vegetation becomes shorter, views become wider and, when the clouds open, the upper slopes of Kibo begin to dominate the horizon.

The trail crosses rocky ridges before reaching the broad Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s most beautiful high-altitude landscapes. Arriving at Shira Camp gives you time to rest, hydrate and enjoy the extraordinary surroundings as the evening light settles over the mountain.

Overnight: Shira Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: 3,850 m → 4,600 m → 3,950 m
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Trekking Time: Approx. 6–8 hours

Today is an important acclimatization day. You climb gradually toward Lava Tower at approximately 4,600 metres, entering a harsher alpine landscape where vegetation becomes sparse and the scale of Kilimanjaro becomes increasingly apparent.

After reaching the Lava Tower area, the route descends toward Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” pattern is valuable for acclimatization. As you descend, the landscape changes again and the enormous Barranco Wall rises ahead of camp. It looks intimidating from below, but tomorrow you will discover why climbing it is one of Machame’s most memorable experiences.

Overnight: Barranco Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: 3,950 m → 4,035 m
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Trekking Time: Approx. 4–5 hours

After breakfast comes the famous Barranco Wall. The climb is steep in places and requires the occasional use of your hands, but it is not a technical rock climb. Your guides lead you carefully through the safest route as you steadily gain height.

At the top, the reward is a magnificent view across the southern face of Kilimanjaro and its glaciers. The trail then rises and falls through several valleys before reaching Karanga Camp. The relatively shorter day provides valuable additional time for acclimatization, rest and preparation for the higher elevations ahead.

Overnight: Karanga Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: 4,035 m → 4,640 m
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Trekking Time: Approx. 3–5 hours

The landscape becomes increasingly stark as you leave Karanga and climb toward Barafu Camp. Vegetation is now minimal, replaced by volcanic rock and sweeping views across Kilimanjaro’s high-altitude wilderness.

Barafu is your final camp before the summit attempt. After arriving, the focus shifts toward preparation: eating, hydrating, organizing your summit clothing and equipment, and getting as much rest as possible. Your guide will brief you on the climb ahead. Tonight will be short because your journey toward Uhuru Peak begins around midnight.

Overnight: Barafu Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: 4,640 m → 5,895 m → 3,100 m
Habitat: Arctic / Alpine Desert → Rainforest
Trekking Time: Approx. 12–16 hours

This is summit day, the longest and most demanding chapter of the climb.

You wake around midnight, dress in your warmest layers and begin climbing under the stars. The pace is deliberately slow as the trail zigzags upward through loose volcanic terrain toward Stella Point on the crater rim.

From Stella Point, you continue around the rim as dawn begins illuminating Kilimanjaro’s glaciers. Eventually, the wooden sign appears ahead:

UHURU PEAK – 5,895 M

You have reached the highest point in Africa.

There is time for photographs, congratulations and a few quiet moments to absorb where you are before beginning the long descent. You return to Barafu Camp for a short rest and meal before continuing down to Mweka Camp, where thicker air and warmer surroundings provide a very welcome final night on the mountain.

Overnight: Mweka Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: 3,100 m → 1,640 m
Habitat: Montane Rainforest
Trekking Time: Approx. 3–4 hours

Your final morning begins with breakfast and a last walk through Kilimanjaro’s beautiful rainforest. After days among rock, ice and thin mountain air, the return of dense vegetation and birdsong makes the descent feel like entering another world.

At Mweka Gate, the climb officially comes to an end. After completing park formalities, you meet your transfer vehicle for the journey back to your hotel. Seven days earlier, Uhuru Peak was somewhere above the clouds. Now you return carrying the story of having stood on the Roof of Africa.

The 7-Day Machame Route is an excellent choice if you want a scenic Kilimanjaro climb with a sensible acclimatization schedule but do not want the longer duration of Lemosho or the Northern Circuit. You should arrive with reasonable fitness and be prepared for several consecutive days of trekking, cold conditions and the physical challenge of summit night.

No technical mountaineering experience is normally required, but Kilimanjaro should never be underestimated. Your preparation, pacing, hydration and response to altitude matter far more than racing up the mountain.

One Mountain. Seven Days. One Extraordinary Finish.

From your first steps beneath the rainforest canopy to sunrise above the clouds at Uhuru Peak, Kilimanjaro is more than a summit to tick from a list. Balo African Safaris will help you prepare for the climb and support you from the trailhead to the Roof of Africa.
