About
The Classic Hut-to-Hut Journey to Uhuru Peak
The Marangu Route follows one of Kilimanjaro’s oldest and most established trails, approaching the mountain from the southeast and climbing through rainforest, open moorland and high alpine desert before reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.
What makes Marangu different from Kilimanjaro’s other major routes is its accommodation. Instead of sleeping in tents, trekkers stay in designated mountain huts. The six-day version also includes an important acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, making it a better-paced option than attempting the route in only five days.
Trek at a Glance
Duration: 6 Days / 5 Nights on the mountain
Route: Marangu Route
Highest Point: Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m
Accommodation: Mountain huts
Difficulty: Challenging
Starting Point: Marangu Gate
Descent: Marangu Gate
Best For: Trekkers who prefer hut accommodation and a classic Kilimanjaro route
Itinerary
Day 1: Marangu Gate → Mandara Hut
Elevation: Approx. 1,870 m → 2,720 m
Habitat: Montane Rainforest
Trekking Time: Approx. 4–5 hours
Your Kilimanjaro climb begins at Marangu Gate, where the team completes park registration and prepares equipment before setting out on foot.
The first trail winds gradually upward through Kilimanjaro’s lush rainforest. Giant trees, ferns and moss-covered vegetation surround the path, and monkeys may occasionally be seen moving through the canopy.
By afternoon, you reach Mandara Hut, your first overnight stop on the mountain. If time and conditions allow, a short acclimatization walk around the surrounding area can be a pleasant way to finish the first day.
Overnight: Mandara Hut
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Day 2: Mandara Hut → Horombo Hut
Elevation: 2,720 m → 3,720 m
Habitat: Rainforest → Heath & Moorland
Trekking Time: Approx. 5–7 hours
After breakfast, you leave the forest behind and enter Kilimanjaro’s heath and moorland zone.
The vegetation gradually becomes lower and the landscape opens dramatically. On a clear day, you may begin seeing both Mawenzi, Kilimanjaro’s rugged secondary peak, and the broad summit dome of Kibo ahead.
The trail continues steadily upward until you reach Horombo Hut, positioned high above the surrounding plains.
Tonight you sleep above 3,700 metres, making hydration, rest and a deliberately slow pace increasingly important.
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 3: Horombo Hut Acclimatization Day
Elevation: Approx. 3,720 m with acclimatization hike
Habitat: Heath & Moorland / Alpine Zone
Trekking Time: Approx. 3–5 hours depending on acclimatization walk
Today is not about reaching the next hut. It is about giving your body more time to adapt.
After breakfast, your guide leads an acclimatization hike toward higher ground, often in the direction of Mawenzi and the surrounding high-altitude landscape.
You climb higher during the day before returning to Horombo Hut to sleep at a lower elevation. This extra day is one of the main advantages of choosing the six-day Marangu itinerary.
The afternoon is kept relatively relaxed, allowing time to eat, hydrate and prepare for the journey toward Kibo.
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 4: Horombo Hut → Kibo Hut
Elevation: 3,720 m → 4,700 m
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Trekking Time: Approx. 5–7 hours
The landscape changes dramatically today.
You leave the moorland behind and cross the broad, exposed alpine desert known as the Saddle, stretching between Mawenzi and Kibo.
Vegetation becomes increasingly scarce. The air is thinner, temperatures cooler and the immense upper slopes of Kilimanjaro now dominate the journey.
Eventually, you arrive at Kibo Hut, your final base before the summit attempt.
After an early meal, your guide will conduct a final briefing. Prepare your warm clothing, headlamp, water and summit equipment before trying to get a few hours of rest.
The next walk begins in darkness.
Overnight: Kibo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 5: Kibo Hut → Uhuru Peak → Horombo Hut
Elevation: 4,700 m → 5,895 m → 3,720 m
Habitat: Arctic / Alpine Desert
Trekking Time: Approx. 12–16 hours
Summit day begins around midnight.
Wrapped in your warmest layers, you leave Kibo Hut and begin the slow ascent through loose volcanic terrain toward the crater rim.
The climb is demanding. Your guide sets a patient rhythm as you work your way toward Gilman’s Point at 5,685 metres.
Reaching the crater rim is already a major achievement, but the journey continues.
From Gilman’s Point, you follow the crater rim toward the summit as morning light begins spreading across Kilimanjaro’s glaciers.
Eventually, you arrive at:
Uhuru Peak – 5,895 metres
The highest point in Africa.
After photographs and time to take in the moment, you begin the long descent back toward Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut.
It is an enormous day, physically and emotionally, but tonight you sleep knowing the summit is behind you.
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 6: Horombo Hut → Marangu Gate
Elevation: 3,720 m → 1,870 m
Habitat: Moorland → Montane Rainforest
Trekking Time: Approx. 5–7 hours
The final day takes you steadily downward through familiar landscapes.
The open moorland gives way to thicker vegetation as you pass Mandara and eventually return to Kilimanjaro’s rainforest.
At Marangu Gate, you complete the final park formalities and reunite with your transfer vehicle.
For successful climbers, it is also time to celebrate the achievement and receive the appropriate summit certificate before returning to your hotel.
Six days ago, you stood beneath Kilimanjaro looking upward. Today, you leave having followed the trail all the way to its highest point.
Why Choose the 6-Day Marangu Route?
Sleep in Mountain Huts
Marangu is Kilimanjaro’s major route offering hut accommodation throughout the climb, making it attractive to travellers who would rather not camp.
Extra Acclimatization Day
The six-day itinerary adds an additional day at Horombo, giving your body more time to adjust before continuing higher.
Classic Kilimanjaro Landscapes
The route moves through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert and the stark upper slopes surrounding Kibo.
Same Trail Up & Down
Unlike routes such as Machame and Lemosho, Marangu follows much of the same corridor during ascent and descent. This creates a straightforward trekking profile and lets you see familiar landscapes from a completely different perspective on the way home.
