Gombe Stream National Park

Chimpanzees on the Shores of Lake Tanganyika

Gombe Stream National Park is one of Tanzania’s smallest national parks, but it holds an enormous place in the story of wildlife research and conservation. Set along the steep forested slopes beside Lake Tanganyika, Gombe is best known for its chimpanzees and the pioneering research that brought global attention to their behaviour, social lives and intelligence.

Why Visit Gombe?

Chimpanzee Trekking

The main attraction is the chance to trek through the forest in search of habituated chimpanzee communities.

Legendary Research History

Gombe became internationally famous through long-term chimpanzee research, making the park especially meaningful for travellers interested in conservation and animal behaviour.

Forest & Lake Scenery

Steep green hills descend toward the clear waters of Lake Tanganyika, creating one of Tanzania’s most distinctive park settings.

Intimate Wilderness Experience

Because the park is small and reached mainly by boat, Gombe feels very different from traditional vehicle-based safari destinations.

Exploring Gombe

Chimpanzee Trekking

Treks begin on foot with experienced guides who help locate chimpanzee groups based on recent movements and signs in the forest.

The length and difficulty of a trek can vary from day to day, depending on where the chimpanzees are feeding and travelling.

Forest Trails

Beyond chimpanzees, the park’s steep forest trails reveal waterfalls, viewpoints, birds and other primates.

Wildlife You May See

Chimpanzee · Olive Baboon · Red-Tailed Monkey · Blue Monkey · Vervet Monkey · Bushpig

Birdlife is also an important part of the experience.

Best Time to Visit

June – October

Drier conditions generally make forest trekking easier and trails more manageable.

November – March

The forest becomes greener and more atmospheric, though rainfall can make some paths slippery.

April – May

Heavy rains can make trekking more challenging and travel conditions less predictable.

Gombe can be visited at different times of year, but trekking conditions often feel easiest during the drier months.
