Nyerere National Park & Selous
Rivers, Wildlife & Southern Wilderness
Nyerere National Park offers a very different safari experience from northern Tanzania. Instead of vast open plains, the landscape is shaped by the Rufiji River, lakes, woodland and channels that attract wildlife throughout the year. The park forms part of the wider Selous ecosystem and is known for its remoteness, large scale and more adventurous safari atmosphere.

Why Visit Nyerere?
The Rufiji River
The Rufiji is one of the defining features of Nyerere. Its channels, lakes and riverbanks support hippos, crocodiles, elephants and abundant birdlife.
Boat Safari Experience
One of the biggest reasons to visit is the chance to explore by boat, giving you a completely different perspective from a traditional game drive.
Remote Safari Atmosphere
Nyerere feels spacious and wild, with fewer vehicles than many northern parks and long stretches of wilderness.
Excellent Wildlife Variety
The park supports elephants, lions, buffalo, giraffes, hippos and African wild dogs, among many other species.
Exploring Nyerere
River & Lake Areas
The Rufiji River system creates some of the park’s most scenic safari landscapes. Boat trips often focus on hippos, crocodiles, waterbirds and animals coming down to drink.
Woodland & Savannah
Away from the river, game drives explore woodland, open clearings and seasonal water sources.
Wildlife You May See
Elephant · Lion · Buffalo · Giraffe · Hippo · Crocodile · Wild Dog · Zebra · Impala · Hyena
Birdlife is especially strong around the waterways.
Best Time to Visit
June – October
The dry season is generally excellent for wildlife viewing, especially around permanent water sources.
November – March
The landscape becomes greener, birdlife is strong and the park takes on a softer, more lush character.
April – May
Heavy rains can make some areas difficult to access and certain camps may operate seasonally.
For most travellers, the dry season offers the easiest combination of game drives and river activities.

How Long Should You Stay?
I’d recommend at least 2–3 nights.
That gives enough time to combine:

and possibly a walking experience
without turning the stay into a race between activities.
Combine Nyerere With
Dar es Salaam
Nyerere works very well as a safari extension before or after time in the city.
Zanzibar
A strong southern safari-and-beach combination.
Mikumi National Park
Useful for a broader overland southern circuit journey.
Ruaha National Park
Excellent for travellers wanting a deeper, more remote southern Tanzania safari.
