4-Day Mount Meru Trek

About

A Wild and Beautiful Climb Above Arusha

Rising dramatically above Arusha National Park, Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and one of the country’s most rewarding trekking experiences. At 4,566 metres, its summit offers a challenging climb through forest, open moorland and dramatic volcanic terrain, with spectacular views toward Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days.

The 4-Day Mount Meru Trek gives the journey a comfortable progression, including an important acclimatization day around Saddle Hut before the summit attempt. Unlike Kilimanjaro, Meru begins inside a wildlife-rich national park, giving the opening stages an unusual combination of mountain trekking and safari atmosphere.

Itinerary

Day 1: Momella Gate → Miriakamba Hut

Elevation: Approx. 1,500 m → 2,500 m
Habitat: Montane Forest
Trekking Time: Approx. 4–6 hours

Your Mount Meru adventure begins at Momella Gate in Arusha National Park, where park formalities are completed and you meet your mountain crew and armed park ranger.

The first stage of the climb is unlike almost any other major mountain trek in Tanzania. The lower slopes are rich with wildlife, and depending on the day’s conditions, you may encounter giraffes, buffaloes, monkeys, antelope and abundant birdlife from a safe distance.

The trail gradually climbs through grassland and forest toward Miriakamba Hut. As elevation increases, views begin opening across the park and surrounding landscape.

By afternoon, you arrive at the hut for dinner and your first night on Mount Meru.

Overnight: Miriakamba Hut
Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: 2,500 m → 3,570 m
Optional Acclimatization: Little Meru, approx. 3,820 m
Habitat: Forest → Heath & Moorland
Trekking Time: Approx. 3–5 hours to Saddle Hut, plus acclimatization hike

After breakfast, the trail becomes steeper as you climb through changing vegetation toward Saddle Hut.

The forest gradually gives way to heath and moorland, and the volcanic character of Mount Meru becomes increasingly visible. As you gain height, the views across the crater and surrounding landscape become more dramatic.

After reaching Saddle Hut, you have time to rest and eat before taking an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru at approximately 3,820 metres.

This relatively short climb is highly worthwhile. It gives your body additional exposure to altitude and, when the weather cooperates, rewards you with magnificent views across the mountain and toward Kilimanjaro.

You then return to Saddle Hut for dinner and an early rest.

Tomorrow begins long before sunrise.

Overnight: Saddle Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: 3,570 m → 4,566 m → 2,500 m
Habitat: Alpine Desert → Moorland & Forest
Trekking Time: Approx. 10–14 hours

Summit day begins around midnight.

With headlamps lighting the trail, you leave Saddle Hut and climb through the darkness toward Rhino Point. From here, the route becomes increasingly dramatic as it follows Mount Meru’s volcanic ridge.

Sections of the summit trail are steep and exposed, requiring concentration and careful footing. Your guide sets the pace while the landscape slowly begins emerging from the darkness.

As dawn approaches, one of Mount Meru’s greatest rewards may appear on the eastern horizon:

Mount Kilimanjaro rising above the clouds.

You continue along the crater rim until finally reaching:

Socialist Peak – 4,566 metres

Standing at the summit, you can look across Meru’s enormous volcanic crater and ash cone, with Tanzania stretching away beneath you.

After photographs and time to enjoy the achievement, you begin the long descent to Saddle Hut for a rest and meal before continuing downward to Miriakamba Hut.

After the exposed summit ridge and thin morning air, returning to the greener lower slopes feels like entering another mountain entirely.

Overnight: Miriakamba Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Elevation: 2,500 m → Approx. 1,500 m
Habitat: Montane Forest & Grassland
Trekking Time: Approx. 2–4 hours

Your final morning is a relaxed descent through Mount Meru’s lower forests toward Momella Gate.

Wildlife once again becomes part of the landscape as you return through Arusha National Park. Keep your eyes open for monkeys, giraffes, antelope and the remarkable birdlife found around the mountain.

At Momella Gate, the trek officially ends. After completing park formalities and saying goodbye to the mountain crew, you meet your vehicle for the journey back to Arusha.

Four days earlier, Socialist Peak was a distant point above the clouds. Now it is part of your story.

Mountain Trek Meets Wildlife Country

Mount Meru rises directly from Arusha National Park, creating a rare trekking experience where wildlife encounters can form part of the lower-altitude journey.

A Dramatic Summit Ridge

The final climb follows Meru’s volcanic crater rim, producing a completely different summit experience from Kilimanjaro.

Spectacular Kilimanjaro Views

On clear mornings, the summit route can offer outstanding views of Kilimanjaro rising across the plains.

Excellent Preparation for Kilimanjaro

For travellers planning both mountains, climbing Meru first provides valuable trekking experience and altitude exposure before attempting Kilimanjaro.
